There are many reasons why you might just want a short break somewhere over a weekend. Perhaps you are holidaying on a budget, or you just couldn't get the time off work, but you are still desperate to get away for a bit to unwind. Or maybe it's a romantic weekend with a special someone. Whatever the case, it can be difficult to choose the right destination for these fleeing visits.

Rome is a perfect choice for short visits. It is a fascinating mix of ancient architecture that tells of thousands of years of human history, great cafs, and some excellent spots for some shopping. Even though it is a great heaving giant city, you can still find a little peace and tranquillity surrounded by the timeless walls of the coliseum.

The hype of Paris can make you sceptical about it, and make you think you are setting yourself up for a disappointment in going there. But the Eiffel tower really is as magnificent as they say; La Louvre really is as fascinating; Notre Dame as spiritual and humbling as you have heard, and the atmosphere just as romantic. This is the perfect place to take a loved one for the weekend.

Another place to take a hopeless romantic is Venice, Italy. It has intricate network of beautiful canals, lined with quant bars and cafs and excellent restaurants. Floating gently down on of the canals in a gondolier is amazing, and wherever you get off you are sure to find culture and beauty that will take your breath away.

From this article it should be obvious that the best places to visit for a short weekend trip are the big cities of the world. They are densely populated hot pots of culture and activity that means even a short stay is bound to throw plenty of opportunities your way.
