Tenerife has been a popular holiday location for a long time because of the many different things it has to offer. Situated in the Spanish Canary Islands, Tenerife enjoys high temperatures all year round and this makes it the perfect sun holiday location. Beaches and resorts have a large number of different activities and excursions on offer for people to enjoy. This isn't the only benefit of the warm climate though as Tenerife has some beautiful and rare wildlife which isn't found in cooler places like the UK.

Tenerife has a large number of lizards which are commonly seen all over the island. One of these is known as the Gallotia Galloti or the Tenerife lizard and is a favourite with tourists. The male of the species are brightly coloured and stands out against its habitat. The Tenerife lizard enjoys eating bananas other tropical fruits and tourists to the island often spend time feeding the lizards.

Possibly the most popular wildlife to Tenerife are the bottlenose dolphins which are commonly seen off the coast of the island. There are a number of different excursions where dolphins can be seen and they often swim around and alongside the boats with tourists on.

As well as the Tenerife lizard, there are also a number of other reptiles on the island. Fairly commonly seen in rocky areas and in amongst plants are the Canary gecko and skink. These reptiles will come and get quite close to human beings as they have become comfortable and trusting of them. Like the Tenerife lizard they feed on fruit and insects and the skink has an interesting defence mechanism in that it can shed and regrow its tail.

Some people visit Tenerife because they enjoy seeing the huge variety of different birds on the island. The surround northern and southern countries of Tenerife differ significantly in temperature and so it is just as common to see a sparrow or blackbird as it is to see a yellow legged gull or a monk parakeet.
