Land End's nearest town is Penzance, at the southern tip of Cornwall .

'Pen Sans' as Penzance was once known in the traditional Cornish language, meant Holy Headland due to the original chapel in close proximity to the harbour. Many years ago Penzance and the immediate area were renowned as a favourite haunt for pirates. Penzance itself has a deep heritage, going back hundreds of years and the evidence of its bygone past is clearly evident to this day. The town has managed to retain its individual character by implementing firm planning laws.

With its warm and inviting ambience Penzance now has a wealth of artistic talent on display. Once a central fishing town with the fishing industry as the key source of wealth, it now caters primarily for tourism and achieves a firm increase in tourism each year due to its huge popularity with a diverse range of visitors.

Despite being hidden away in the far corner of the UK, access is easy by road due to an excellent network of dual carriageways and motorways. There are additionally numerous straightforward coach and rail links to the town.

If you wish to discover Cornwall, Penzance is a terrific base. Penzance has one of the warmest climates in the UK thanks to the Atlantic Gulf Stream.

When Queen Victoria was is power a large number of rare and exotic plants and trees were imported to this region. With its distinctly Mediterranean vibe, as a result of its exotic plants this area has a romantic atmosphere.

The Golowan Festival is held in June making it a very busy time for Penzance with the arrival of huge numbers of visitors. The Golowan Festival is a celebration to mark the arrival of Midsummer. At this fantastic event you can enjoy live music, parades, art and be thoroughly entertained for ten whole days. There are also bonfires, spectacular firework displays and a traditional fair with rides. The Streets are decked with fresh flowers, bright banners and a huge show of colour.

Another very popular date in the immediate area is the Newlyn Fish Festival , held every year on the last Monday in August. This particular festival celebrates Newlyn's history of fishing which has been a crucial ingredient of Cornish life which has helped Penzance become the prosperous town that it is now. Many different types of boats fill the whole harbour and a range of the area's typical fish are displayed in the local fish market. Along with a range of stalls, there is also entertainment to enjoy.

Penzance caters well for families who will find unending choices of eating and shopping facilities. A number of ancient monuments have survived in the surrounding area, and provide fantastic opportunities for a day trip.

There are many art studio's and galleries in the area due to Penzance having the largest concentration of artists in the United Kingdom besides London. At Penlee Park, you will find an art gallery which has been open since 1895. It houses works by famous artist Stanhope Forbes. There are many fantastic privately owned galleries to visit and nearby St Ives offers world-class galleries like the Tate, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and the Leach Pottery.
